Military Services

You - or your family - may need us one day.  Learn how we can help.

During times of mobilization and deployment...

No one ever said that being in the Reserve, National Guard, or any other community-based military position was going to be easy for you or your family.  Military life, in fact, often creates unforeseen hardships.

The good news is that American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) helps community-based military members and their families cope with separation and other special needs related to service in the armed forces.

As a community-based military man or woman you and your family are entitled to the same valuable Red Cross emergency services as full-time active duty military personnel.

The Red Cross in Our Community

Disaster Relief and Community Disaster Education

When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there. This year we responded to 24 local disasters (including the St. Clair fire), in addition to the ComAir Crash and September Flood events. We helped 154 affected individuals with emergency food, shelter and supplies.

Because being prepared can make your family and community safer and sometimes minimize injury and destruction, we made 34 disaster education presentations in the community training 796 people.

 Health and Safety Services

From first aid, CPR and AED training to swimming and lifeguarding, American Red Cross programs help people lead safer and healthier lives. This year, 2,979 individuals learned lifesaving skills through 265 classes offered by the chapter.

Armed Forces Emergency Services

The American Red Cross provides communication between those in the Armed Forces and their families. We have a worldwide network that reaches service members wherever they are to communicate a birth, death or illness. This year we provided emergency connections for 47 military families providing 98 services.

 Blood Services

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Thanks to generous blood donors, the Red Cross collects and distributes nearly half the nation’s blood supply. Over the last year, we helped run 186 blood drives, collecting 4,136 units of blood with the ability to assist 12,408 patients.

 A Note About Volunteers

We depend on volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to carry on our work. Volunteers constitute 97 percent of our total workforce, serving as members of the board, instructors teaching lifesaving skills, disaster action team members, office administrators, event organizers and more.

This year, 181 volunteers made the work of the chapter possible, contributing 8,760 hours, for a contribution estimated at $150,584.40.
